Call to Worship

ONE: As the season of Advent begins we celebrate hope.

ALL: We know that through the birth of a tiny and helpless child, God is coming to save the world.

ONE: While we watch and wait for Jesus to arrive, we join in God’s mission by bringing grace and mercy to those who need it most.

ALL: We engage the poor and the poor in spirit, letting Christ’s light shine through us.

ONE: We speak words of comfort and love  to a world in need of healing  as we share our stories of God’s transforming Spirit.

ALL: Together, we are a sign of God’s hope for the world.

Lighting of the First Candle of Advent: Hope

Sharing the word Hope: Kathleen Mitchell

God of surprising grace, when we least expect it you bring fresh new life and redemption.  Give us courage as we share all you will accomplish through Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Response Hymn - Hymn #88

Prayer of Confession

Gracious God, whose coming fulfills the promise of ages, we confess that we may not be prepared to receive you when you come. We may look for a majestic arrival, while you want us to find you in some ordinary manger. We think the signs of your coming will be clear, but you may enter our world in the darkness of midnight. Awaken us to your presence, and to the surprising ways that you will come to us. Amen.

Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news! In Christ we have a new covenant, and we are forgiven. Praise be to God! Amen.

Centering Prayer

Life-giving God, we are a blessed people.  In this moment of worship we pray that you might bless us anew.  Give us ears to hear the melodies of praise that fill the world around us.  And as we hear the songs, teach us to sing, to dance with abandon, to rejoice in the wonders of your grace.  Forgive us when we have passed by signs of your mercy.  From this moment forward, open our eyes to the places where joy is springing up from parched ground.  Lead us by your Spirit in the pathways of your overflowing peace, hope, and love.  Amen.

Call to Worship

ONE: Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God,

ALL: who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever;

ONE: who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry.  The Lord sets the prisoners free;

ALL: the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous.

ONE: The Lord watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

ALL: The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord!

Lighting of the Third Candle of Advent: Hope

Sharing the word Hope: Pam and Fred Matthews

God of extravagant generosity, in Jesus we discover the depth of your care and the lengths you will go to save us.  Forgive us when we ignore the needy, trample your creation and refuse to share all that we receive from you.  Teach us to love our neighbors, caring for each other in the name of Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Response Hymn - Hymn #88

Advent Prayer

God of Joy, we come to you with hearts full of wonder at the wisdom of Mary as she lifts her eyes to you in glory and praise.  Help us to understand how you choose those who are the least likely by the world's standards to be the ones to bring about your good news to the poor, the oppressed, those who are hurting and those who are afraid.  Help us to listen and hear their messages of joy.  In the name of Mary's little baby, we pray. Amen.
