Reflection for Easter Morning
“If I shed every belief I have and stood naked in the nothingness of my knowing, what would I have left? Only you. Only you. Only you. The entirety of my being would find its feeble feet on the solid ground of your endless love, the true nature that upholds me.” ~ Mary Baker Eddy
Ringing of the Easter Bells
Centering Prayer 1
Triumphant God, we rejoice together in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We give thanks for the
faithful women who traveled to the tomb early in the morning and carried their fragrant spices. We give thanks for the heavenly messenger whose good news amazed the women and transformed them into evangelists. We give thanks for the glorious hope that death has lost its sting and joy comes forth from sorrow. Renew your life in us, O God; grant us courage to live as people empowered by the resurrection all the days of our lives! We pray in the name of the risen Christ. Amen.
Welcome

Call to Worship 2
We enter a virtual gathering space once again this season. We worship together in spirit and in truth, though not in person. We pray, sing, and listen to God’s Word despite the fear that pervades our community. We trust Christ’s peace, a peace given freely, despite our doubts and fears. We know the Holy Spirit is among us, blowing with a hopeful wind of change. We feel the presence of Christ, the one who died and rose again, and brings us eternal life. We submit to God’s leading in this time of transformation. We experience the joy of Easter morning when we celebrate all God has in store for us. Let us face the fact that the walls of this church, and the life of our institution cannot entirely contain Jesus Christ! Let us celebrate the irrepressible power of God breaking out with life where we least expect it! Let us worship God!
Hymn 232 Jesus Christ Is Risen Today
Easter Affirmation 3
“Christ is risen!” “He is risen indeed!”
We repeat our Easter shouts of surprise and joy again and again, for news of your victory over powers of death and evil is news so startling so amazing so different from the news that bombards us day by day. Beyond our comprehension You startle us again and again with resurrection Life, bringing grace and hope and joy. You, in your risen power, are shaping all our days, and so we praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

For they eternal life shall win.

Your light is the only light we need as we travel through life's mystery. Your word the only voice we hear that still small voice that leads us to the place where we should be. Your presence is the only company we need as we walk this narrow road. Your fellowship the warmth we crave to help us on our way. May the truth of Easter, the joy of Easter, and the blessings of Easter be with us this day and all days. Amen.

Centering Prayer 1
We thank you, God, for drawing us to this place and time and for interrupting us with your gift of life in Christ. Whether we have heard the news many times over, or are this day listening with brand new ears, surprise us with your justice and righteousness, that our lives might turn in the right direction; startle us with your goodness and mercy, that we might receive your empowering forgiveness; stagger us with your hope and peace, that our eyes will remain wide open, wondering what you will be doing this week in our world and in us. This we pray in the name of your Messiah. Amen.

Call to Worship 2
As people, as a group, as a community of faith – we gather in this place, in person or online. We gather to listen, to speak, to worship, and to pray. We gather to be with God. Because we know – it is out of God’s authority, it is out of God’s love, that we live. Alleluia! Let us worship God!
Hymn 239 Good Christians All, Rejoice and Sing!
Prayer of Confession 3
Almighty God, Maker of all things, Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, Holy Spirit, Giver of life, have mercy on us. In raising Jesus from the grave, you shattered the power of sin and death. We confess that we remain captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to death. We overlook those in need and are deaf to cries for justice and mercy. Forgive our unwillingness to be even just a little uncomfortable. Help us to trust your power to change our lives and make us new. Help us allow you to stretch us in ways that serve your work in our world, for we know that you are the only path to joy and life abundant given in Jesus Christ, the risen Lord. Amen.
Response Hymn 247
When our hearts are wintry, grieving, or in pain,
your touch can call us back to life again;
Fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been:
love is come again like wheat arising green.

Holy God of Joy, we rejoice in the reality of who you are. We live within the joy of your love for us. Our contentment comes and goes. Our happiness ebbs and flows. Prayer of Confession 3
O God, You who are always doing a new thing, we confess that we sometimes close windows against the fresh air of new ideas, against the noise of other people’s worries, against the winds of change. Centering Prayer 1
This is love. Not that you spoke words of comfort, walked with the unclean and unloved, shared wisdom, bread and wine, brought healing into lives and challenged the status quo. This is love. That you spoke the word of God, walked a painful road to the Cross, shared living water, bread of life, brought Salvation to the world and died for the sake of all. This is love. It is a seed sown in the ground, which germinates, blossoms, and spreads its sweet perfume.

Call to Worship 2
We worship the God who inhabits our world and indwells our lives. We need not look up to find God, we need only to look around: within ourselves, beyond ourselves, into the eyes of another. We need not listen for a distant thunder to find God, we need only listen to the music of life, the words of children, the questions of the curious, the rhythm of a heartbeat. Let us worship God.
Hymn 339 Lift Every Voice and Sing
Prayer of Confession 3
The Divine Gardener cannot sow seeds of justice and peace where there is nothing but hearts of dry, hard rocks. We confess that our hearts may need tilling and the digging out of the deeply rooted sins that crowd out seedlings planted with divine compassion. God of steadfast love, you change bitter tears of remorseful hearts with raindrops of mercy; God of steadfast love, you change the cold shame of contrite hearts with sunrays of mercy; God of steadfast love, you change the stony edges of repentant hearts into landscapes of mercy. Nurture new life in us O God, of integrity, honesty and generosity. Amen.
Response Hymn 247

cultivate true friendship with you through boundless forgiveness. In Christ, this faithful love is
planted in our hearts. Gathered as your community of believers, our family of faith, with the help
of the Holy Spirit living in us, we can now produce forgiveness for each other as we are forgiven.

Hymn 258 A Hymn of Glory, Let Us Sing!
Invitation to the Offering
During this Easter season, we celebrate the Risen Christ and stand in awe of that precious gift. We invite you to celebrate the love and grace of God as you consider your offering today. We invite you to share your gifts as you are able, with God’s gift to you in your heart. We thank you for continuing to send your offerings to the church. Our ministries continue because of you. We thank you for your continual giving to our community at Bethany.

Prayer of Dedication 5
Holy One, whose heart abounds with gifts, receive this offering as a sign of our intention to live surrounded by your mercy, inspired by your Spirit, open to the joy of your presence, hospitable to one another, and generous toward your world. Bless what we give and bless what we keep, that all may be used for your glory. Amen.
Prayers of the People
The Lord's Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
