Unto Us a Son Was Given
The year was the decade-maker, 1970-
Along a German street, head down,
Stomach empty,
Walked a young man totally alone.
“Who are you, young man?”
“I am Mudeer, I fled Pakistan to escape-
I was turned back from England and
I am afraid.”
“Come home with me.
You need have no fear.
Let us first get you something to eat.”
Unto us a son was given!
Later two grandchildren call us,
“God Parents.”
Mudeer is a Muslim, and I am a Christian
And in the universes somewhere
God is smiling.
