Affordable Housing Discussion

Please join us for the 1st Saturday Dinner on June 4 at 6 p.m., when we will host an educational evening about Affordable Housing in the Tri-City Area (San Bruno, Millbrae and So. San Francisco)

Bethany's Community Action / Community Life committee will host a dinner and discussion about affordable housing in our area. Joining us will be Diana Reddy, who will show us a presentation and Peter Stiehler and his wife, Kate, of Catholic Worker Hospitality House in San Bruno. Diana and Peter will lead us in a discussion after the presentation.

This is your opportunity to come for dinner and fellowship and then hear about the housing issues in our area and what steps are being taken to work on more affordable housing for our neighbors. Please invite your friends and family to join us.

Since we need to know how many people to plan for dinner, please sign up at the church or contact us to RSVP.

UPDATE:

On June 4, the Community Action/Life Committee hosted a dinner and educational evening. Our first speaker, Diana Reddy, launched into the topic of affordable housing in the Daly City/San Bruno/So. San Francisco area. After many statistics were presented and much thought-provoking conversation ensued, Diana handed the microphone over to Peter Stiehler who spoke about the housing dilemma in San Bruno and then introduced his friends, Aaron and Candace, who enlightened us on the subject of “tiny house” living.

Aaron and Candace currently live in an approximately 150 square foot tiny house they built for $20,000, which is located on a trailer sitting in the backyard of the Catholic Worker residence on 2nd Avenue in San Bruno.  Aaron and Candace find that their tiny house meets all their needs very nicely. Peter then encouraged Bethany to think about building some tiny houses and locating them on our property. Community Action/Life will keep in touch with Peter about this topic and discuss this issue in our committee meetings and with Session, thinking of ways we can help with housing opportunities.

The evening was well attended by about 35 people and the lively conversation was both heartbreaking and hopeful. We know we will continue to hear about the housing crisis and we plan to keep our hearts and minds open to God’s calling regarding housing issues.
